Japan's distilleries scaled up single-malt production only in the 1980s, so aged stock is thin just as the world fell for the category — Nikka even discontinued its age-statement lineup outright. Producers now ration bottles like Yamazaki, Hibiki and Hakushu across the US, and age statements come and go.
